The Maschinengewehr 42 (machine gun 42), is a beast of a gun. With a bipod, despite being fiddly and clunky – it gives an almost sniper’s range. Certainly on Hardcore games, a controlled burst of 2 – 4 rounds of the MG42 will have an enemy dead, even if it doesn’t hit with all rounds. It’s long-range accuracy for a machine gun is phenominal, even better than the DP-28. Without using the bipod, it is actually, even better. The iron sights are such that hitting the correct spot is almost a given, rather than a variable and the power is devestating.

As a Run ‘n’ Gun, it isn’t too effective, the strange, angular carrying of the gun insists that a forward shot is actually shooting at between 10 and 11 O’clock, so you have to point to the right and down slightly to aim forward, but still, crouch and aim, lay prone and crawl, aim – BANG BANG – they are indeed dead. It seems a little alien to utilise a machine gun in this way, crouchy crouchy, softly, softly, but it really does work.

The magazine is large enough to cope with a mini-onslaught, though you won’t fare well against experienced close-quarters players with SMGs and care is certainly needed when reloading as it does take some time to change the clip, load and then cock the gun. But it’s worth it.

It takes out Juggernauts with impunity, it shoots through walls with ease and it really can act as a sniper rifle, if you keep your eyes super peeled and the sights extremely twitchy.

Well worth the ridicule you get for carry this behemoth into battle.
